Teams will have the option of participating in our mentorship program. Teams wishing to participate will be assigned a sponsored high school athlete to their team. High school players are selected based on character, skill, leadership, and dedication to the sport. All players in the league are responsible for mentoring these high school athletes by facilitating character and skill development. This includes refraining from using swear words, respecting teammates, opponents, and officials, and encouraging and providing the athletes with feedback.
All sponsored high school athletes are required to score keep one game per week, participate in league fundraisers, volunteer nights, and write a thank you letter to their sponsor. High school athletes should demonstrate a willingness to learn.
Two (2) technical fouls in one game will result in an automatic ejection. Two ejections will result in a season long suspension with no refund.
Any abuse (verbal or physical) directed towards league participants, officials, or scorekeepers will result in removal from the league WITH NO REFUND OF THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON – NON-NEGOTIABLE
No team will be allowed to press if they are up by twenty or more points. If a team presses in this situation, they will lose possession on the first occurrence and on the second occurrence they will lose possession and receive a team technical foul
We also ask that ONLY the team representative(s) speak to the officials about any concerns.
Games will include four eleven (11) minute running time quarters. The last two minutes of the game will be stop time. During running time, the clock will only stop for timeouts and player injuries. Games will include a five (5) minute half time. Overtime will occur if teams are tied at the end of regulation time. During the regular season, overtime will consist of a single three (3) minute stop time session. Teams will each receive one time out during overtime. If the teams remain tied after one overtime, the teams will each receive one point for a tie. In playoffs, additional three (minute) stop time sessions will take place until there is a winner.
Most games will be played with a shot clock. If we are playing in the old gyms at Durham College or at Kingsway College shot clocks are unavailable. The shot clocks we play with have limitations as they are connected to the running time game clock. This means they have to be reset every time the ball is out of play. During the last two minutes (stop time) the shot clock will follow FIBA rules.
Teams are expected to be punctual. There will be a ten (10) minute grace period and if five (5) players are not on the court and ready to play the team will forfeit. The ten (10) minute grace period will be taken off of the game time in order to ensure that later games remain on schedule. Two forfeits will result in removal from the league. A team must start with 5 players but can finish the game with less than five. *If the opposing team agrees, the team that does not have enough players may pick up another player from the league. The game will count towards standings. Teams may not use players who are not registered in the league as they are not insured. If the opposing team does not agree, and the grace period is over, the team will forfeit.
NEW TO 2015***If a game is cancelled due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances, team captains or coaches will be contacted. These games will NOT be rescheduled and the teams will receive a tie.
Teams will receive two (2) points for a win, one (1) point for a tie, and zero (0) points for a loss. If we have enough teams we will have two divisions to ensure competitive games.
FIBA rules will be used with a few exceptions: Time outs CAN be called by players on the court or on the bench and they will be granted immediately. There are also modifications to the shot clock rules (as stated above).
A two-shot bonus will occur when a team reaches five fouls (per quarter). Fouls will be reset every quarter. Regarding free throws, the ball will be played on the release. Each team may be granted 2 time-outs in the first half and 3 time outs in the second half with a maximum of 2 of these time-outs in the last 2 minutes of the second half. 1 time-out during overtime. All time-outs are 1 minute.

The team roster may have a maximum of ten (10) players (including if your team chooses to play with a high school sponsored player). Following June 30, 2015 you will not be allowed to make any additional changes to your roster. To be eligible for playoffs you must play in at least 50% of the regular season games. If you are injured and as a result have to miss games, you can provide a doctor’s note to be eligible for playoffs. Players can only play on ONE team. The only exception is if a team uses a player from another team to avoid forfeiting. This can ONLY be done if the opposing team grants them permission.
Uniforms must be worn during games. If a player does not wear their XXcel uniform the team will receive a technical foul. No hair clips, jewellery, casts, or any other object that could cause player injury are allowed to be worn during games.
Teams may select a Head Coach and an Assistant Coach. Female coaches are encouraged as this league is designed to provide female role models for high school athletes. Seeing individuals similar to you perform a skill successfully has been shown to increase confidence (Widmeyer, 2009). That being said, male coaches are allowed, but we request that if you have one male coach that you also have a female coach.
Insurance only covers registered players. Children and other non-participants are not allowed on the gym floor.
Drugs and Alcohol
Players suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol will not be allowed to play. They may also receive additional game suspensions.
